Kunori High School Japanese Exchange

For 2 weeks from November 10, 8 students and 2 staff from Kunori High School in the mountainous Nagano Prefecture west of Tokyo visited TRAC.
There have been trips to farms, caves, Hip Hop Dance lessons, visits to other schools, shearing, traditional Japanese dance and calligraphy lessons, yabby racing and numerous parties and dinners and other amazing experiences organised by the school and host families. The Japanese students also performed a dance for the school at Assembly. It was a contemporary dance of an ancient Japanese story.
It seems that both hosts and billets gained a lot from the program, with many tears being shed at the farewell dinner.
A big thank you to all the host students, who have gone beyond the call of duty to make the Japanese students’ stay memorable, and I hope the friendships and cultural exchange will continue well into the future. Another thank you to all the teachers and other staff who have provided extra lessons and transport in their own time.

We are hoping to solidify the friendship with a continuing relationship well into the future, enriching our students with the Japanese culture and language. So the current Year 10 students will be able to have the opportunity to host around a dozen Japanese students next year for a couple of weeks.

We will also be planning a trip for the end of November/beginning of December 2008 to visit Japan, which will be open to Year 11 and 12 students, and their parents, and will include a week being billeted at Kunori High School and a week and a half of travel.

School Certificate Results in 2006

The number of students who presented for the 2006 School Certificate in NSW was 82,838.
The Riverina Anglican College presented 104 students for 19 courses.

Students are awarded a grade (A to E with a D grade indicating satisfactory achievement of outcomes) for all subjects presented. This grade is derived from school based assessment processes.

In Mathematics, Science and Geography, on the basis of the high quality of the assessment tasks completed by the students, we allocated significantly more As and Bs than the State average. In all courses the grades allocated reflected the achievements of students and the rigorous standards set by the school.

For the subjects of English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography and Computing Skills students attempted an externally developed and marked examination. As a result of examination performance students are given a percentage mark for each course and are placed in a band (1 to 6) that describes the student performance. Band 6 indicates an excellent result and a mark of 90% or above.

In all examinable courses, the school mean was significantly higher than the state mean.
Refer to tables 1 and 2)
The number of band 5 and band 6 awarded for all courses was higher than the state average. In particular, students performed especially well in Mathematics, Science and Computing Skills with strong performances in Geography and History.

Summary
The results of the 2006 School Certificate were especially pleasing. The 2006 cohort was the largest group presented by the school for the School Certificate and the results achieved, statistically, were the best so far.
The fact that the school – a non-selective, comprehensive, co-educational, accessible school - results were consistently higher and in some cases much higher than the State average indicates the high standard of teaching and learning provided by the school.
A number of students who found it difficult to engage in learning at other schools were given an opportunity at the College. It is especially satisfying to report that many of these students took advantage of the provision made for them at the College and contributed significantly to the life of the College.

The Higher School Certificate in 2006
The number of students presenting for the 2006 Higher School Certificate was approximately 61,000.
The Riverina Anglican College presented 45 students for 30 courses.

Students were provided with a percentage mark and a band (1-6) placement for each course. The school mean mark exceeded the State mean in all but four subjects.

The school mean for ten subjects significantly exceeded the State mean. These subjects were: Chemistry, Computer Subjects, Design and Technology, Drama, Food Technology, Legal Studies, General and Extension Mathematics, Personal Development, Health and Physical Education and Visual Art. (Refer to table 3)

The number of bands 5 and 6 (88) awarded was much higher than the State average and indicated very high level achievement by individual students. Especially satisfying was the achievement of band 6s in General Mathematics. It is very difficult to achieve a band 6 in General Mathematics with only 3.00% of candidates being awarded this band. Nine percent of the school’s candidates were awarded a band 6.

In 18 courses students achieved a mark of 90 or above. This statistic is used by some to rank the performance of the school. On this basis The Riverina Anglican College was rated in the top 140 schools of the 980 schools in the State, in the best ten of the eighty schools west of the Dividing Range and the best school in Wagga Wagga.

The University Admission Index (UAI)

The UAI uses the results of the HSC to offer students placements in university courses. It generates a UAI mark from 50.00 to 100.00.

The UAI mark for each student is not made available to the school. UAI marks can, therefore, only be collected from individual students or by using UAI estimator computer programs.
It would appear that at least 20% of students from The Riverina Anglican College received a UAI of between 90 and 98. More than half of the students received a UAI of 70 or above.

These results were reflected in the offers of places made to students by the universities.
