TRAC WINS YR 9 TIMBER CHALLENGE
At the Sydney
Timber and Woodworking show held on June 19
& 20, 2009 the TRAC Year 9 timber challenge
team attended the final of the Y9 Timber challenge.
The competition is organised by the Industrial
Arts Teachers Association, and aims to encourage
teamwork and interest in woodwork.
Regional heats were held, one of which was hosted
by TRAC. Our team won this heat and earned their
spot in the final.
A team consists of four students. Their task
is to complete four woodwork projects, all identical,
in a specified time. The finals task was a small
jewellery cabinet, the design of which was known
beforehand. Four of them had to be completed
in 3 hours. In the end the TRAC team was the
only one to succeed in completing four projects
in the time, due to the wonderful concentration
and application shown by our four competitors,
Charlie, Jeremy, Jayke and Matt. Well done!
The boys will each receive a woodworking plane,
and the School will receive a power tool called
a router which is worth several hundred dollars.
The boys
“coach”, TAS teacher Bruce Harper
is delighted with their achievement.
Kunori
High School Japanese Exchange
During
November 30 to December 19 2008 the Japanese
exchange program culminated with several students
and parents visiting Japan and our sister school
Kunori in the North of Japan. The group experienced
the busy lights of Tokyo, met with Geisha, saw
markets and shrines in Kyoto, sipped tea in
a Buddhist monastery in the mountains of Koya,
marvelled at the largest aquarium in Osaka,
felt remorse at the Atomic museum in Hiroshima,
fed deer and climbed mountains at Miyajima,
had snow fights at our sister school in Yonezawa
and relaxed in the coastal town of Kamakura.
Overall
it was an eye opening trip highlighting the
diversity, cuisine and uniqueness of Japan,
with some of the students now being inspired
to teach English in Japan. The school stay was
interesting, although everyone suffered going
to school at 8:00 am and sometimes only leaving
at 8:00 pm, six if not seven days a week. Despite
the terrible school hours, the locals were incredibly
generous to make TRAC’s stay as memorable
as possible.
Kunori High
School should be visiting for the third year
of our exchange program in November 2009, and
for those who missed out, Year 10, 11 and 12,
and any accompanying parents, will have hopefully
have another opportunity to visit in 2010. An
excellent, safe and exciting trip for young
and for old.
Go
Go Beach
"Go-Go
Beach" was performed
to packed houses at the Riverina Playhouse
on June 23, 24 and 25.
This
production was highly successful and
gave a large number of students the
opportunity to display their considerable
dramatic, musical and dancing talents.
